Transitioning Teachers

Beyond the Classroom: Who am I Without Teaching?

For teachers questioning what comes next.

This is a forward-looking event for teachers who are thinking about leaving the profession, who have already decided to leave, or who know that their relationship with teaching and with their career has changed.

This is not therapy. It is a reflective, experiential day for teachers thinking about what comes next.

“Leaving a profession doesn’t mean leaving behind who you are. It’s about working out which parts of yourself you want to take with you.”

The day is reflective and experiential rather than instructional. It runs on values exercises, identity work, group discussion and future-orientated activities, and its themes are identity, values, purpose, possibility and transition.

Among the questions the day opens up:

  • Who am I if I am not a teacher?
  • Grieving the loss of a professional identity.
  • Which values do I want to carry forward?
  • Transferable strengths and skills beyond the classroom.
  • Imagining a future that is not another version of teaching.

If what you need first is to make sense of what happened at work, When Teaching Hurts covers that ground. Some people do both.
